2020 is set to be an exciting year for several writers we have published, with major new books being published. Here are four highlights to whet your reading appetite.
Published on January 30th, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line is Deepa Anappara’s much-anticipated debut novel. Deepa won 2nd prize in our 2013 competition. Her novel has been receiving huge pre-publication praise, with Ian McEwan calling it “A brilliant debut”, and Booker-prize winning author of The Gathering, Anne Enright, commenting “Djinn Patrol is storytelling at its best.” It has also been selected for BBC Radio 2’s Book Club.
Deepa’s fellow 2013 BSSP shortlistee, Jane Healey, will have her debut novel, The Animals at Lockwood Manor published on March 5th. A J Pearce, author of Dear Mrs Bird, says “Jane Healey’s excellent debut novel is a rich story full of tension and darkness”, while bestselling author, Cressida McLaughlin, calls the novel “a vivid, beautiful but haunting story, with a thread of darkness running through it . . . I was thoroughly engrossed”.
The winner of the 2017 Bristol Short Story Prize, Dima Alzayat, will have her debut short story collection, Alligator and Other Stories published by Picador on May 28th. Dima was signed by literary agent, Juliet Pickering after Juliet first saw Dima’s work when judging our 2017 competition. Juliet sold UK and Commonwealth rights for Dima’s collection to Picador editor, Ansa Khan Khattak.
Brent van Staalduinen, the winner of the 2015 Bristol Short Story Prize, will have two novels published by Canadian publisher, Dundurn, this year. His second novel, Boy, will be published on May 30th. Miriam Toews, the acclaimed writer and recipient of numerous literary awards calls the novel “Exquisite … Boy is a perfectly compelling protagonist.” This will be followed by Nothing But Life in October.
We wish all four writers huge success with their books and look forward to many more publications from these superb storytellers.
