2013 BSSP Longlist Announced

July 17, 2013   Joe Melia

After hours of agonising, painful decisions, it is with great pleasure that we announce the 2013 Bristol Short Story Prize longlist. Many, many thanks to all of the writers who submitted to this year’s competition, it has been a massive honour and thrill for our readers to read so many wonderful stories. As one of our longlist selectors says, “I’m amazed at how the standard of stories submitted to the Bristol Short Story Prize seems to rise year on year. The range and quality of the stories we read through was stunning.”

We received 2,510 stories from all over the world. There were stories of a few hundred words and others right up to the word limit of 4,000. A couple of things that stood out this year were the large number of stories written in the second person and the equally high number featuring child narrators. Common themes and subjects included absent fathers, Greek Mythology, alcohol, revenge, water – in all its forms, outsiders, war and science.

Chair of the judging panel, literary consultant and editor Ali Reynolds says:

“We were so impressed with the standard of the stories on the longlist and the display of such writing talent. Each year the Bristol Short Story Prize receives such strong entries but the level of accomplished writing this year surpassed our expectations. Huge congratulations to all of the writers on this longlist, it has been such a pleasure to read your stories. I can’t wait to find out the identity of the writers behind these brilliant stories.”

Big congratulations to the 40 writers listed below. We wish them the very best of luck for the rest of the competition:
