Written by joe melia Monday, 19 July 2010

We're really delighted to announce that Valerie O'Riordan (below) has won the 2010 Bristol Short Story Prize for her stunning and incredibly powerful story 'Mum's the Word' - an altunforgettable, 350-word piece of writing. It's hard to imagine a story that could make more of an impact. The announcement was made by the chair of this year's judging panel, Bertel Martin at the Arnolfini on Saturday. The Lord Mayor of Bristol and special guest, writer and creative writing teacher Sarah Salway, presented all the shortlisted writers with their cheques and copies of the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 3 which features stories by all twenty of the authors on the shortlist.

Ian Madden was announced as the 2nd place prizewinner for 'Only the Sure of Foot' and Rachel Howard came in 3rd place with 'Gardening'.

Sarah, also, talked brilliantly about her love of short stories and called for celebration rather revival and saving - something we couldn't agree with more! We are very grateful to Sarah, the Lord Mayor and, of course, the 11 writers on the shortlist who were able to be at the awards ceremony. We will be posting pictures of the event very soon.

'Ground' exhibition Sat July 17th

Written by joe melia Monday, 12 July 2010

'Ground', Miranda Lewis's unforgettable short story set in a worn-torn city provides the inspiration for a stunning exhibition of artwork by pupils from Henbury School in Bristol.
'Ground' was originally published in our inaugural anthology and the exhibition heralds the beginning of a major initiative we're really excited about - bringing the dynamic world of the short story to young people.

From midday until 6pm Saturday 17th July in the Arnolfini 'Light Studio'
Arnolfini, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol BS1 4QA
The exhibition will include live readings by Miranda

The exhibition is a pilot for a major initiative for next year. July 2011 will see the inaugural BSSP Short Story Festival : a day-long celebration of the short story in its many wonderful guises. Part of the day will see several Bristol schools performing or exhibiting adaptations of stories BSSP has previously published. These will be in various genres- drama, film, music and art. This will be a wonderful opportunity to bring the dynamic world of the short story to young people, encouraging them to participate in a really creative way. As the writers we publish will work directly with the students it, also, enables us to offer the writers the chance to interact with readers directly, see how their writing is perceived and witness it trigger new creative works.

We are aiming to make this an annual event and are really grateful to Arts Council England and Bristol City Council for their funding help which will enable us to get the inaugural festival off the ground next year.
